FUN WITH THE PARADIDDLE This lesson will be for student already having some skill on the drum set. Practice the paradiddle (RLRRLRLL) for about a minute to get started. Now play the paradiddle with the R stickings on the hi hat and the L stickings on the snare drum. Play accents on the first R and the fifth note being an L. Think of playing the paradiddle as sixteenth notes in four and your accented L note will be laying down the back beat on 2 and 4. Play your bass drum with your first R note which will put it on counts 1 and 3. Also try playing your bass drum with all of your R stickings. Have fun. Next time we’ll take it a little farther.
MORE FUN WITH THE PARADIDDLE
Last intermediate lesson we applied the paradiddle to the hi hat and snare drum with the bass drum on counts one and three and also with the bass drum with the R stickings. This time play the paradiddle as sixteenth notes between the bell of the ride cymbal and the hi hat. Count in four as in the previous lesson, playing the snare drum on counts two and four. This will be an L sticking on two and four. Play the bass drum on counts one and three and also with the R stickings. Work on fill and solo ideas by practicing the paradiddle on the snare drum. Play the first R sticking on the floor tom and the fifth note, an L sticking, on a smaller tom while playing the other notes on the snare. Practice these combinations to be ready for more patterns next time!
