DRUM SET - GETTING STARTED - LESSON 2

Last lesson we added eighth notes on the ride cymbal with the bass drum on counts one and three and the snare on counts two and four. This time we’ll add some snare and bass drum notes. Let’s start by adding a bass drum note on the and of three. Now the snare drum and bass drum rhythm count will sound like this: one, two, three and four. Remember that the snare drum is played on counts two and four. Three bass drum notes are played on counts one, three and the ‘and’ of three. Now add a bass drum note on the ‘and’ of one. Now the bass and snare count will be: one and two, three and four. While playing these notes along with the eighth notes on the ride cymbal, add a snare drum note to the ‘and’ of two. Now the bass and snare count will be one and two and three and four.

Practice each of these combinations many times keeping the tempo steady. There are many more quarter and eighth note combinations possible so experiment and have fun!
