I always thought that I would play for a living. Even the studio work wasn’t what I had in mind. I have played in circuit bands all over, some signed some not, some good some not! Teaching for me came about from playing with great musicians who had no idea of what they were doing. So I would tell them. They thought I was speaking Greek or something. But being a very patient person, I found I had a knack for explaining the complexities of music in a way that could be easily understood. I enjoy jazz music, which seems to employ almost every musical concept and variation, that exists in music. So theory to me is the knowledge that allows you to create your own style. Having taught for 15 yrs, I have found that much to my surprise I enjoy it far more than I ever did playing. I have students that drive every week from as far away as Galveston and Dallas for lessons. Not every teacher is right for every student, and not every student is right for every teacher, but when the combination is correct, magical things will happen. If you are thinking about taking lessons, take your time to seek out an instructor. Don’t choose the first person you come across because of convenience, including me. Your instructor is guiding you in your search for knowledge, make sure you choose a guide that is right for you. And if at all possible, try to find someone who has done for a living what you are wanting to do. Trust me, it makes a difference.
